Hiring Help & Questions

Smart questions before you hire. Real answers from the community.

This section is for clients (and anyone planning a project) who want help before they commit to a contractor — what to ask, what to expect, how TradeLink Hub fits in, and how to use the platform when you’re ready to hire.

Not sure how the whole system works? Start with the pinned guide in How TradeLink Hub Works.

What this forum section is for
  • General hiring questions — “Is this estimate reasonable?” “What should I ask an HVAC tech?”
  • Scope and planning — maintenance vs replacement, timing, permits (general guidance only).
  • How to use TradeLink — browsing businesses, messaging, posting jobs with photos.
  • Red flags and best practices — what good pros do, what to watch out for.
  • Peer experiences — lessons from other homeowners (not legal advice).
What to do on the platform vs here

Ask here (forum) Do on the trade platform
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
“How do I describe this problem?” Post the job + upload photos
“What’s normal for a service call?” Message a specific business
“How does TradeLink bidding work?” Place/review bids on live jobs
“Tips before I hire anyone” Read reviews on business profiles
General education Hire, complete work, leave review
Rule of thumb: If you need a specific pro to see your issue and respond with a quote or bid, use the HVAC platform (or your trade site). If you want community advice first, post here.

Before you post a question
  1. Search this section — your question may already have a thread.
  2. Be specific — trade (HVAC, etc.), symptom, equipment age, region (city/state), urgency.
  3. Photos help — you can describe what you’d photograph for a job post (model numbers, error codes, visible damage). Avoid posting full home addresses publicly.
  4. One topic per thread — easier for businesses and other clients to help.
  5. Stay respectful — businesses in this community may answer; treat them like neighbors, not free consultants.
Copy, paste, and fill in (question template)

Use this when starting a new thread:

Location: (city / region — not full street address)
Situation: (what’s going on?)
Equipment / area: (furnace, AC, ductwork, etc.)
Timeline: (emergency / this week / planning ahead)

Three ways clients can get help on TradeLink

1. Browse and message (no job post required)
  • Search local businesses on the trade platform.
  • Read ratings, reviews, and profile history.
  • Send a direct message with your question or project outline.
2. Post a job with photos (best for clear scope)
  • Describe the work and upload pictures of the unit, access, damage, or install area.
  • Businesses see the same details you’d want them to have on site.
  • On HVAC, businesses may bid on posted jobs (see platform for current options).
3. Ask the community here
  • Great for “what should I know before I call someone?”
  • Business members may chime in with professional perspective.
  • Other clients share what worked for them.
Hiring checklist (before you say yes)
  • Verify who you’re hiring — use platform profiles and reviews, not just a forum username.
  • Clarify scope — what’s included, what’s extra, timeline, cleanup.
  • Ask about licensing/insurance where your trade and locality require it (requirements vary).
  • Get it in writing — estimate, change orders, warranty on parts/labor.
  • Payment safety — be cautious with large upfront cash; never share banking details in forum posts.
  • After the job — use platform tools to mark satisfied or not satisfied and leave an honest review.
We can’t endorse individual contractors in forum replies. Use the marketplace to choose and hire.

What not to post here
  • Full street addresses, gate codes, or personal financial info.
  • “DM me for a quote” spam (clients or businesses).
  • Public rants against a named business — use platform dispute/review flows and support for job issues.
  • Emergency life-safety situations — call 911 or local emergency services first.
Business members in this section

Tradespeople are welcome to answer questions in good faith — educate, don’t hard-sell. One helpful reply builds more trust than ten links to your website.

Clients: a forum answer is general guidance, not a binding quote. Always confirm scope and price with the pro you hire.
